I tried this idea 2 years ago and so far its worked very well. I have a 10 team keeper and 6 teams make the playoffs. But with the 4 teams that dont make the playoffs they are still fighting for draft position the next season. The way I do it is the team that comes in 7th place (1 spot out of the playoffs) gets the 1st pick in the draft the following year, followed by 8th place getting the 2nd pick, 9th place getting the 3rd pick and 10th place getting the 4th pick. That keeps teams out of contention updating their rosters, etc. Of course the best thing to always have is a really competitve group of guys playing, which is hard to come by.

category sidepools- win a category win x bucks OR everyone who didnt finish last in a category splits some type of prize

monthly sidepools for best improvement in standings/points - or from ASBreak on

draft lottery for the bottom couple of teams - to not guarantee 1st pick to worst team

cash penalties one league I am in is 200 to enter and another 200 if you finish last, people do trades like crazy to improve their team not dump trades just to get out of the basement

I run a 12-team rotisserie league. Each team kicks in $50. Each category winner gets $25 per category, and the remaining money gets divided between 1st, 2nd and 3rd place ($150, $75, $25). It helped keep some of the bottom feeders interested, as a couple still had shots to win categories. Just an idea.
