Marines' skipper Valentine says...give A-Rod a break

“He will be when he retires the greatest player to have ever played the game of baseball, in my opinion,” says Valentine.

When asked why Rodriguez always seems to be the center of attention, much of it negative, Valentine says he can’t say for sure but he has his theories.

“I can only speculate that (New York’s) a tough town to have more than one hero in and it seems like it’s kind of Derek Jeter’s town. A-Rod’s a good looking guy who tries to do the right thing and maybe it’s just tough to live up to expectations. “He makes an awful lot of money so he’s going to get an awful lot of attention--people take an interest in him, write about him a lot, so everything he does is going to be scrutinized, categorized and labeled. It’s not an easy situation for him, for sure.

“(The media) has been less than kind to many a great baseball personality and we might have to wait for history to really give Alex his true justice.”
