I think that's a dumb rule. It's a graduation, it's supposed to be a happy time for all of those involved. Why mess around with that by imposing stupid rules like this?

Because if there was applause for every single graduate and they waited for that applause to die down before announcing the next person, it would take all day.

Huh? That doesn't make any sense. Celebrating is done at the end when the announcer presents the class, not after every graduate is announced. Graduation services have always worked this way, haven't they? :-?

Not at my high school, but there were only like 70 students in my graduating class...

Must be a fairly new development, I've never seen one work that way.
