Actually the term started in baseball and was adopted by boxing. To minimize the handicap of having to squint into the sun, most baseball diamonds were laid out with the batter facing East. With left handed pitchers arms facing south, sportwriters called them southpaws.Los Angeles Cubs wrote:they call them southpaws because....wait, havent you ever seen Rocky? He explains it. Its about a lefthanded boxer who was facing south at a fight and knocked a guy out while facing south. something like that.....
