I would draft 6 minimum, probably 7. I usually like a 7sp to 2 closer split. 7sp at 180 innings will net you 1,260 inngs plus your closers.

On a 25 man roster I like to start off with 3 closers and as few as 5 starters. I like to keep a couple spots fluid so I can pick up next year's Webb/Willis when they appear. Most people don't like to change their rosters early in the season, but if you incorporate that flexibility into your roster to start you should be able to get great stats out of these pickups.

I like to draft 4-5 good starters and 2 closers and get additional starting pitching from the waiver/fa wire. Good setup man are valuable too. They can stabilize your team's era, k's and whip.

Well look at it this way. A starter over the course of a full season will give you 200-225 IPs barring injury. Some a little more. But let's split the difference more or less and say 210 IPs. Closers give you 65-80 IPs a year, so lets say 75 for arguments sake.

That means if you play 5 SPs full time you get 1050 IPs.

2 closers gives you another 150 IPs for a total of 1200.

That leaves you with 50 IPs to play with.

So, I have found the best way to appraoch this is to:

a. Play your stud/good SP's all the time. Most leagues you may have 3 stud SPs...maybe 4 depending on your pitching strength.
b. closers stay active all the time.
c. Non stud SPs get spot started based on match-up. Which means you need at least 2 of these to be effective...more if you have a weaker staff.
d. setup men are effetive in a limited role depending on your pitching strength. If you have only 2 top SPs and/or are struggling to find starts, they are a good way to get productive IPs or to fill out your IPS.

So I would think in your situation, you need to draft a min of 5 SPs and 2 closers. You can fill in with free agent pickup once the season starts. If you see a pitcher you really like late that you want to take a flier on, do it. It is all speculative inthe very late rounds, so if you draft a guy that does not work out and you cut him for a free agent early in the season it is no big deal.

With a 1250 max, I usually draft 5-7 starters depending on the quality that's out there along with 3 relievers.
