Didn't Pedro have a ridiculous 1997 season also? Or some year in that vacinity.

OK,

Pedro's 1997 season was ridiculous (0.93 whip, 1.90 era, 305 K's, 17 Wins). But, check out 1999:

23 Wins
213.1 innings
313 K's

0.92 whip
2.07 era

Look at those bolded stats! 313 K's in 213 innings. 8-o

Bob Gibson in 1968

22-9
28 CG's
268 K's
1.12 ERA
.853 Whip

Dwight Gooden in 1985

24-4
16 CG's
268 K's
1.53 ERA
.965 Whip

Sandy Koufax with 382 K's in '65 and 27 CG's is insane

I think that it's hard to say that there's any one best season ever, they are all awesome. It would take some SABR type of analysis as well to evaluate matchups, climactic conditions (the SI a couple of weeks ago speculated that 'with global warming, Mays wouldn't have made 'The Catch') defenses, etc.
