Analyze Keepers Pre-Draft, What do I need early in the draft

Postby BoilerATC » Thu Mar 22, 2007 9:47 pm

I'm in a 14 team 5x5 mixed keeper league. We already submitted our keepers and our draft is on Monday. Here is my team:

C: Chris Iannetta
1B: Carlos Delgado
SS: Derek Jeter
3B: Chipper Jones
CI: Ryan Shealy
MI: Troy Tulowitzki
OF: Grady Sizemore
OF: Lance Berkman
OF: Delmon Young

SP: Brandon Webb
SP: Jeremy Bonderman
SP: Jered Weaver
SP: Erik Bedard

Joey Votto
Fernando Martinez
Cameron Maybin
Homer Bailey
Matt Garza
Nick Adenhart
Adam Miller

Here are the top players at each position:
Catcher: Posada, Piazza, Pudge, Ramon Hernandez, Barrett, Estrada
1B: Swisher, Helton, Sexson, Overbay, Laroche, Youkilis, Adrian Gonzalez
2B: Iguchi, Kent, Phillips, Durham, Giles, Cantu, Hudson, Sanchez
3B: Glaus, Mora, Blalock, Huff, Encarnancion, Betemit, BJ Upton, Iwamura
SS: Hall, Renteria, Cabrera, Peralta, Greene
OF: Franceour, Ibanez, Ordonez, Swisher, Cuddyer, Drew, Burrell, Willingham, Hawpe, Cameron, Byrnes, Crisp, Granderson, Taveras, Hart
SP: Zito, Harang, Arroyo, Penny, Burnett, Chris Young, Lowe, Schilling, Santana, Mussina, Garcia, Escobar, Anibal Sanchez, Bush, Lilly, Snell, Maine, Billingsley, Cabrera, Hill, Colon, Loewen, Patterson, Dice-K, Igewa
RP: Papelbon, Putz, Gordon, Saito, Jones, Wickman, Borowski, Izzy, Dempster, Zumaya, Benitez, Valverde, Torres, Broxton

Both BJ Upton and Chad Billingsley are in the draft and people might not realize it. They aren't on prospect lists anymore and they don't have full time gigs.

So where do I need to win this league again? I have the 14th pick of the 1st round. Ideally Putz and Papelbon would fall to me. I'd also settle for Franceour or Swisher. Hopefully I can get Kent or Phillips with my thrid pick.

All ideas are greatly appreciated. Leave a link.

I think your thinking is dead on....Papelbon or even Dice K would be nice there...

Swisher is my fav from the OF list, and Kent, Phillips, or Giles should be solid and fall to you later.

Anyone else have any ideas on who I should try and get with my first four picks? I want two closers, but what else? Thanks.

You have a decent core, buit some holes to fill:

1) Closer, is correct

2) SB

3) Power

4) SP - not that deep in SP .. a good start, but you could use one more decent one.

So ... not to suggest any order, but here are the hitters I would look to over a period of several rounds:

1B: Not a real need for yu. but I like Swishe, LaRoche, Ad. Gonzalez

2B: Phillips, Hudson

3B: Glaus (also SS eligible in some leagues), Ed. Encarnacion

SS: HALL (also 3B and in some elagues OF), Greene (closer to end game)

OF: Ibanez (very underrated), Swisher, Francoeur, Willingham, Burrell, Cameron, Byrnes, HART (great potential)

The SP's to look at: Dice-K, Harang, Lowe, Escobar, Bush, Hill, J. Patterson and Maine

Relievers: Papelbon (duh), Borwoski (not great but decent job security), Saito AND Broxton (try tto pair them ... broxton has real value even not being the closer), Valverde.

Good luck.

Because you have most of your SP already set, I'd use the first couple picks on a hitter and RP -- "best player available" that falls to you. Looks solid!
