Draft strategy for a Home Run Derby league

Postby Knighthammer » Sun Mar 11, 2007 1:05 pm

I have a draft today for a HR only league. 10 teams, points only. All HR worth 1 point. We draft positions: C, 1B, 2B, 3B, SS, LF, CF, RF, OF, Util & we have 2 DL spots.

My question is concerning the strategy of this draft. Should I draft best available first considering positions I need or should I look at position scarcity for HR production?

Ummm, no?

I hate these types of leagues.

You have to go with the biggest power threats. I wouldn't care about positions.

Draft guys who hit a lot of homeruns. That's it. No SS will hit over 30, unless Glaus is eligible; no 2B besides Utley will hit over 30, so he's definitely a mid first rounder. (And I don't see Bill Hall reaching 30.) There's maybe 6 3B who will do it, and 10-12 1B; maybe 15-20 OF. Try to grab one of Pujols, Ortiz, and Howard for a good shot at 50 HR. Dunn, Giambi, and Swisher are more valuable than in other leagues because you don't care about average. Soriano is a 40 HR threat, but he's not a top 3 or 4 pick because steals/total bases aren't counted. Et cetera.

This doesn't sound interesting to me. The strategy is very simple. And if David Ross can be a top-3 catcher, there's something wrong.

Piazza could be a player some people overlook at catcher, I would target him.

Just target the biggest bats available. Utley will still go very highly because he is the only 2b capable of hitting 30.

Definitely target Hafner, and Dunn becomes gold as well.
