FGarcia to the Phils for Floyd and Gio Gonzalez

Postby SOUTHSIDE HITMEN » Wed Dec 06, 2006 11:45 pm

The Sox give Garcia to Phily for someone they gave up in Roiwand Thome trade Gio G and Floyd. At first thought is why did KW do this deal? This deal doesn't help the Sox for next year. :-? .

CBS sportsline.

-- The Chicago White Sox have traded pitcher Freddy Garcia to the Philadelphia Phillies for pitcher Gavin Floyd and a player to be named.

In Garcia, Philadelphia patches on major area of weakness. The Phillies were so desperate for starting pitching that they handed Adam Eaton a three-year, $24 million deal earlier this winter. Garcia, 17-9 with a 4.53 ERA in 2006, joins Brett Myers, Cole Hamels, Jon Lieber, Eaton and Jamie Moyer in the Phillies' revamped rotation.

The trade suprises me from the Sox's end. Floyd's star has faded quite a bit. He's still intriguing, but not the hot commodity he once was. Gonzales is good, but then again the Sox had just traded him to Philly last year. I guess I thought they could get more for Garcia.

As far as Lieber goes, I have mixed feelings on him being a Brewer. For Turnbow straight up, yeah, that'd be fine. But I hope they don't have to add too much.

Works for me. Floyd has been awful, and I'm hoping this means the Lieber for Turnbow/Mench rumor is a possibility.

as a sox fan, i'm not too worried about the move. Next year would have been Sweaty's last year in Chicago anyway, and they get two young arms in return. I'd rather have McCarthy in the rotation this year than Garcia anyway, plus, i'm sure he'll be a much cheaper deal. Sure, Floyd's star has fallen, but the same was said of Contreras in NY and no one even bothered to say that much about Bobby Jenks, or Matt Thornton, both of whom turned out to be pretty good once Don Cooper got ahold of them. The deal doesn't rock my world, but i'm more than willing to take a wait-and-see approach this for a couple years with the young guys while watching Brandon McCarthy hopefully equal or better Sweaty Freddy.
