Here it is... I don't think that Dane Cook is funny. At all. He has yet to make me laugh. I've tried; I've watched his standup, I've seen his Tourgasm show, I saw his opening monologue on SNL. I thought maybe something was wrong with me; that I was missing something. There has to be some reason he's so popular. Everyone likes him. He has his own hand-signal. He sells out stadiums and he's the most talked about comedian. And I don't think he's funny. I don't hate him, he doesn't annoy me, I just don't think he's funny. He's actually quite likable; but his material is drawn out and unoriginal. I mean, I don't know if something is wrong with me personally or what, because the guy is huge. People talk about him all around me, "You see Dane Cook last night? Oh man, he was hilarious!" Huh? I watched him do a 10 minute bit on excuses you can use when you can't make it to your friend's party, 4 minutes of which was him pantomiming himself on the couch watching TV. His segways are excellent though... he really knows how to go from one topic to the next... it's just that his topics aren't funny. Maybe it doesn't apply to me, I don't know. I'm in his demographic, I'm a 25-year-old college-educated white male. I watch 10 minutes of Chris Rock and I'm laughing hysterically. I watch 10 minutes of Dane Cook and I'm scratching my head. It's not that I don't get it either, I get the jokes, I see his point, I understand his observational humor... I just don't observe it as funny. Six months ago I would have said Carlos Mencia was the most overrated comedian; his material is unoriginal too, i was ready for something new, something other than pointing out the obvious dissimilarities between races and or lazy people. But the difference between Mencia and Cook is that Mencia has made me laugh before. Cook has yet to pull that off.
Ok, i'm done.
