Ethics vs. Rules

well to be fair, there are grey areas with everything.

However, the unwritten rules crap is SO stupid. Wasn't there a recent argument about bunting to break up a no hitter? Only problem was it was a 1-0 game?

I think in terms of fantasy, collusion/vetoing are the only two things that lend themselves to discussion. And adding/dropping players so the waiver time will result in no one being able to pick up a pitcher.

But in terms of most things, if its in the rules, its in the rules and ethics don't really enter into it, even though the two things are seperate but related.

I guess it kind of dovetails with the debate some people have with "Survivor." Is it unethical to lie in survivor to win? Or is it amoral, since everyone knows going in that it is a game of deception, and you almost have to do it at one point or another.

Is it ok to bunt with two outs in the 9th inning to break up a no hitter

Padres :-°

how about intentionally walking a guy in the last game of a season so he cannot improve his batting average and thus take the batting title

Padres :-°

In Bochy's defense though. he did come out right after the game and say he had no idea that Helton needed that AB, and would have never ordered the BB if had known. He was just playing out the game. Bochy was clearly upset.

as for the No hitter .. it was against the Dbacks, so eff em.

got to love those Padres ;-D

Is it ok for a player to steal second base when his team is up 10-0 in the late innings?

All of those things are "legal" in baseball's rules, but that in no way means they are the "ethical" thing to do.

i dont think bunting with 2 outs in the 9th of a no-no is unethical. i think its a silly call to make and just plain stupid.

It clearly falls under the "unwritten rule" category. Is there a thread anywhere about these unwritten rules in baseball. If not, someone list a few. It would be a good read.

Ben Davis broke of Schilling's perfecto a few years with a bunt. I think it was sentiment of some players/explayers that it would be ok, if Ben Davis normally dropped down bunt singles (like Coco Crisp or Ichiro). Other players/explayers felt that bunting for a base hit by anyone in a no hitter was a not cool...
