Martinez was removed after giving up six runs in the first inning against the Phillies on Monday and indications are that it was due to a strained right calf muscle, according to the in-game broadcast. Martinez reportedly hurt the calf in pre-game warmups then struggled in the inning, giving up hits to three of the first four batters. He also hit two batters, surrendered a walk and committed a bak in the inning while being hurt by some questionable defense. The question that has to be asked is, was it the calf or a convenient excuse to sit him with the team down 6-0 against Cole Hamels and Martinez only pitching on four days rest? If Pedro is okay, he will next start on Saturday against Colorado when the Mets honor the 1986 World Championship team. If he is not 100 per cent, look for Darren Oliver, who replaced Martinez to start the second inning, to get a spot start as Mike Pelfrey is on the DL and Brian Bannister is getting hit hard while on a rehab assignment at Triple-A Norfolk.
