Ian Snell Changed His Name to Match Wife's

Actually, it was the opposite. Oquendo was the name of Snell's wife, which he took when they had a baby somewhere around 2000. A couple of years ago, he decided to revert to Snell.

From Pirate Report Online, Sept. 2003:

«Oquendo wants to go back to being called Ian Snell, which is his proper name. However, when his son was born following the 2000 season, Oquendo decided to go by his baby's mother's surname.

"I know the name thing has caused some confusion and some writers have had fun with it, calling me the player to be named later," Oquendo said. "However, there are personal family reasons behind it that I don't consider a joking matter."»

Yeah, this happened a while ago...but a different story to be sure.

Snellquendo.... I've heard of a few cases where a guy's last name was so "bad" they changed to or combined his last name with his spouses, but whichever it. Oquendo or Snell, it ain't like your name is Ted Hitler. Dude's gotta be seriously whipped to bail on his last name otherwise... and like mentioned, if she's a major hotty, there's nothing wrong with that.
