Red Sox Recall Van Buren, Activate Pena

Postby JoeyTTU01 » Tue Jul 18, 2006 6:26 pm

BOSTON -- With injuries mounting on their pitching staff, the Red Sox were forced to shake up their roster Tuesday.

Right-handed reliever Jermaine Van Buren was recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket while outfielder Wily Mo Pena was activated from the disabled list in time for the second game of the team's series against Kansas City.

To make room on the 25-man roster, the Red Sox optioned left-handed reliever Javier Lopez to Pawtucket and designated utility player Willie Harris for assignment.

The Red Sox made the four moves while still waiting on the results of a bone scan and CT-scan performed on right-handed starter Tim Wakefield. The veteran knuckleballer left Monday night's game after only four innings due to upper back pain.

Skipper Terry Francona said the team would prefer not to place the hurler on the disabled list at this time, adding, "You're always sore the next day. I don't think we need to place him on the [disabled list] right now. We still want to give him the benefit of the doubt."
