Mesa loses the game, and his job
For now, Phillies will go with a closer-by-committee approach.
By Todd Zolecki
Inquirer Staff Writer

It's a reconstruction project, and a major one at that. But it must be done.

Jose Mesa needs to fix this.

Until that moment arrives, manager Larry Bowa said, the Phillies will use a closer by committee.

Over the next several days, Mesa, who coughed up three runs in the 10th inning of a 5-2 Phillies loss to the San Diego Padres yesterday at Veterans Stadium, will work on the side with pitching coach Joe Kerrigan to fix a flawed delivery that has been a source of frustration for fans this season.

In other words, Mesa temporarily has lost his job.

"He's having problems right now," Bowa said in a major understatement.

Bowa remained noncommittal when asked whether Mesa would return to his closer's role after he works out with Kerrigan.

"We'll see how it turns out," the manager said.

That is understandable. Bowa is trying to put the Phillies, who hold a two-game lead over the Florida Marlins in the National League wild-card race, in the playoffs for the first time since 1993.

Rest of Story

This is probably short term...but look to Williams or Plesac to get the opps for a short time....

God, now I don't have Mesa as a reliever anymore, I am giving up on relievers this year, it has been a total mess when it has come to these guys.

Er, I think dropping Mesa for anyone like Kolb or Lincoln is a little premature, considering they're much more of a wild card. Mesa is crappy, yes, but I'm thinking that in a week or two he'll be back from his being grounded by Bowa. Unless you're in a really shallow league, I think dropping Mesa is a mistake.

Mesa has been absolutely killing my ERA and WHIP. I'm third to last in each of those categories, with a staff of Pedro, Wood, Millwood, J. Williams, Washburn, and B. Webb
