Right now he's a set up man. If the Sox don't land another starter, I'm predicting that Kim goes back in the rotation and Williamson closes. If the Sox do land a starter, then Williamson is worthless.

Even if the Red Sox don't get a starter, I still highly doubt Kim moves to the rotation, at least this season, and Epstein has said the chance of that happening is remote at best. They have already had him change roles from starting to closing once this year, and it probably would be too much to ask him to make another reversal, especially because he'd have to build up his stamina all over again in the middle of a pennant race. Moving guys back and forth between the bullpen and rotation also often causes injuries, so there is no way he gets asked to start again this year. They'll probably give him a shot at winning a starting job in spring training next season.

Even if the Sox don't get a starter they do have other options if Mendoza keeps struggling in the 5th starter role. They can call Fossum back up to start again, and they also have Person rehabbing and working up his arm strength to possibly become a starter, so either of those guys are more likely. I think the only possible way Williamson closes this year is if Kim starts really struggling and blowing alot of saves. Then they might put Williamson in the closer's role, and Kim in situational relief to straighten him out. But right now, it's about 90% certain that Williamson will not close again this year.

They can't keep starting Mendoza, its like an automatic loss every 5th start. Man I really hope they land Vazquez...

Anyways, I will stop daydreaming (well, 1230 is hardly the "day") and say that Kim is closing, no questions asked. Funny though how the Sox started the year with no closers and now they have 2...

what's funny is how the city of cincinnati funded 90% of the ballpark's construction--we were told 2003 would be a contender, would help bring people downtown, "build it, and we'll win"...such a great baseball town, just getting raped by negligent and headstrong bastards.

goodbye scott williamson. goodbye jose guillen. goodbye aaron boone.

what year are we building for, now? man, i wish i was rich. i'd buy that team and make it right. boston, have fun with our closer as your set-up man. i'm jealous of your contending team--it must be nice.

Lol, Lol, LOL.......LOL. I feel you man. I'm an Oaklnd fan and blessed with Beane pulling off savy trade after savy trade every year. However I'm realistic, and with our budget I predict 5 years from now we will be in or already started complete rebuilding. We just dont have the money to keep alot of our players after contracts expire.

I used to live in New England. When attending games at Fenway and BSing with chowder heads about the Sox contending and them not takeing the division from the Spankees (I hate them of course.......) All I ever heard was Nomaauuggghhh to justify their contention talk, and when asked about the Yanks success, all they did was gripe about the Yanks payroll. They seem to forget the only reason they ever got Pedro was because the Expos couldnt afford to keep him. LOL, the pot calling the kettle black. Must be nice to have a closer as a setup man.

Williamson is a wait and see type player.

The deadline has a lot to do with it, and I think the Sox are going to land either Ponson, Suppan, or O.Perez. They even went after Freddy Garcia (UGH!). Luckily Seattle declinded.

Well, assuming they get a new starter, I would assume Williamson stays in setup duty.

Yeah as the above poster said, it's just hard to drop Williamson until you know for sure. Even if the Red Sox don't get a starter, Kim may not be moved back to starter.

Edit: with Suppan on the Red Sox, I guess we know that's a bad sign for Williamson owners now, huh?
