BALTIMORE -- Julio Lugo had to leave the Devil Rays' Opening Day game against the Orioles on Monday in the third inning after suffering a left oblique strain.
The Tampa bay shortstop incurred the injury while hitting a foul ball in his second at-bat. Despite suffering the injury, Lugo remained at the plate and hit an infield single that Baltimore starter Rodrigo Lopez threw away, allowing Joey Gathright to score from third base and giving the Rays a 3-2 lead.
Lugo made it to second base on the play, then he was visited by team trainers before scoring on Jorge Cantu's single that gave the Devil Rays a 4-2 lead.
Luis Ordaz replaced Lugo in the field in the bottom half of the inning.
"It pulled hard on my last at-bat," said Lugo, who said he will receive treatment Tuesday while the Rays are idle. "And we'll see how it is on Thursday."
