Fantasy Baseball Preseason 2005

Postby dewey finn » Thu Mar 30, 2006 12:23 am

Timeline: Around this time, Last year.

I was wondering who were the top "unknown" names last year during ST. Were they guys like Street? Barmes? McPherson? Bedard? I'd just like to compare what the general consensus of the cafe was last year on darkhorse rookies/sleepers/comeback players.

This season it's guys like Edwin, Kinsler, Hardy, Barfield, Willingham, Hermida, etc. that are getting all the attention, not knowing how they will actually do once the season starts.

Welcome to the wonderful world of baseball HYPE.

I still remember how some folks had darn near pencilled Gregg Jefferries into the HOF in the late 80's based on a decent showing in limited late season MLB ABs and a solid minor league history. Same for Joe Charbonneau, Brien Taylor, Ben McDonald, Todd Van Poppel, and the list goes on.

It happens every year, and frankly, baseball wouldn't be near as much fun without the speculation and letdown the rooks give us every year.

To answer your question, this time last year, I think everyone was pumped for Upton, Weeks, Fielder, Young, McPherson, Gathright, Youkilis, Howard, and Street. They might have been "unknowns" to casual fans, but the Cafe folk seem to be omnipotent in their knowledge of up and coming sleeper studs.

I, for example, know of a 6 month old here in town who is being scouted by the Dodgers, has Boras on line 2, and should easily go .375, 130R, 60HR, 190RBI, 45SBs by 2008 at the latest..... :*)

It was a pretty mixed bag, which is bound to happen when you get as many different ideas as there are floating around the Cafe. Young guys like Sizemore, Wright, Barmes, Burke, Bedard, D. Cabrera, Iguchi, Closser Blanton, and Kazmir all got their good run of hype. Some worked out, some didn't. Veterans like Dye, Jenkins, Burrell, Ensberg, and Mondesi got some hype to breakout/comeback.

I recall quite a bit of Bonderman hype. I've blocked everything else out as I blew chunks of MR strategy last year... :~(
