Alou says ball is attacking Alfonzo

Associated Press

SAN FRANCISCO -- The San Francisco Giants hoped Edgardo Alfonzo would be the solution at third base. Instead, he's been one of the first-place club's few problems -- and manager Felipe Alou has seen enough.

Struggling at the plate and in the field, Alfonzo was benched by Alou on Friday before the opener of the Bay Bridge Series against Oakland.

Alfonzo signed a four-year, $26 million contract in the offseason to be the Giants' starting third baseman. After three months, it hasn't been money well spent: Alfonzo is hitting .216 with five homers, 27 RBIs and a paltry .291 on-base percentage.

"He needs to work on some things,'' Alou said. "I see the ball attacking him, instead of the other way around. He told me he physically feels fit, and he looks good when he's making the plays.

"We'll give him some time. It's one thing to work and play, and another thing to just work.''

Pedro Feliz took Alfonzo's place on Friday. Alou doesn't know how long the change will last
