Looking for a catcher?

Postby Sevillano » Sat Jun 28, 2003 12:43 am

Victor Martinez just got called up by the Indians. He has dominated at every level of pro ball (especially lately), and will someday be a stud in the majors. It's more a question of when, but if you're in a keeper league, or looking for a catcher and you can't afford to wait, give him a close look. I just picked him up myself.

Well, in the minors he's been both. He has the pop to put up 30 HRs a year eventually, and I can see his average hovering around .315.

His only weakness is his fielding, because he's only been catching a few years, but that probably doesn't concern most fantasy managers.

He started out real slow this year, but he's been on an absolute tear over the past month. He was batting something like .245 a month and a half ago, but was hitting .328 when he got called up yesterday. He's a switch hitter too, and I think he has more pop from the left side, but I couldn't say for sure. I did see him drop two bombs in one game from the left side then hit one out from the right side the next day.

He was IL player of the week last week, and just got named to the AAA all-star team. The past two years he's won the batting title and been the league MVP in A & AA. Again, I don't know how long it will take for him to adjust to the majors, but he's gotten it done at every level.

Could be a very valuable pick up. Only time will tell. I won't be taking the chance on him (Pudge in 2 leagues, Posada in the other 3) but I do hope he does well.
