Start Seo against NYY?

Postby ramble2 » Fri Jun 27, 2003 1:21 am

I'm in a pretty tight battle in a H2H this week. I started Hudson today (game time decision, phew!) and have a good lead in ERA and WHIP with 34 innings already pitched (1.59 to 3.83, and 0.85 to 1.35, respectively). I have five more starters due this week, including Seo, Webb, Zito, Franklin and Perez. Is Seo a good risk against the Yankees? Right now I'm leaning towards starting him.

I would have to recommend against it, especially with the lead that you have in ERA and WHIP. Seo gets very few K's so won't provide much help there and he doesn't have a great chance at getting the win considering that he is facing a very tough offense and the Mets offense is one of the worst in the league and they are also probably without Cliff Floyd for the weekend, just making matters worse. Conversely, there is the chance that he can really get lit up ruining your ERA and WHIP lead. I would rate his chances of getting the win at less than 30%, and with few K's and the possibility of costing you categories you already lead, I don't think it's a good risk.

I would bench him. Seo doesn't get many k's which means that the hitters are making contact with the ball. It could get very ugly for Seo. Giambi and the Yanks seem to be heating up a little.

Thanks for the advice. Upon reflection, I think I agree. After today's games I'm 20 Ks back - but my opponent only has Mulder going on Sunday. So I've got a shot at catching him in Ks without Seo. Seo is probably only worth 3 Ks (if that) and is unlikely to win, so I don't think he's worth the risk.

I may drop him for someone like Donnely or Nathan, or some other relief pitcher who might grab me an extra strikeout or two and might be good for a win here or there.

Yep, sit Seo. Sounds like the best thing to do. He's been pitching pretty well lately, but every streak comes to an end sometime. And I think Seo will be handed a loss against the Yanks. I have this strange feeling he's really gonna get rocked. (just a gut feeling!)

" If it ain't broke- don't fix it " That's my attitude about Seo. His
last 6 starts against Atlanta(2), Seattle, Texas, Philly and Florida
have been great, and all of those teams have a batting average
higher than the Yanks. Stats 41.2 innings, ERA 1.53 and whip .95.
I am starting him, he may get pounded, but you could say the
same thing about his prior 6 starts. Screw the ks, I'll take the
wins and other stats.

Seo is a flyball pitcher, meaning he can get hurt in a batter's park like Yankee Stadium (short porch on R field). So be careful.

Good call folks! 5.1 IP, 6 ER, 9 hits, 1 BB, 3 Ks. Also, it turned out I was only 12 Ks behind my opponent, and I've still got those four starts over the weekend. Thanks for the help!
