After a so-so year and a half and some injury concerns, Mota is a project going into 2006, albeit one meriting more optimism than Matt Mantei last year. It would be gross negligence on the part of the Red Sox if they turned down such a deal.

ugh...I like Crisp, but I would rather hold on to Marte. We'll need him when Lowell goes Bellhorn on us.

Given that both Marte and Crisp earned about the minimum last year, I don't think salaries had much to do with Mota's inclusion.

So I guess I'm the only Sox fan that actually would like this deal :-?

I'd say there's a pretty good chance. ;-)

One difference is that Crisp is eligible for arbitration after this year, so hist cost goes up significantly next year, while Marte is still 3 years away from arbitration.

What does having a great closer have to do with making a better SU man?

What a horrible deal for the Red Sox. After such a great trade for Marte, why trade him for a decent OF?

Good point, I didn't know when he would be eligible exactly. So he'll probably be due ~$3M in his first year? I would still doubt that Boston would feel inclined to insist on evening the salaries.
