That wasn't why it was eaten.
Matt Cain - worth a pickup?
The_Met_Threat wrote:Hes the next best prospect to be called up other than the king. Is he worth a gamble? Will he be any good?

As for Matt Cain, his HR/9 is 1.36 in the minors this year, and when coupled with a 4.51 BB/9, I dont think he will be wildly successful this year regardless of his high strikeout totals. For the future though, I've seen him throw and the sky is the limit.

Oh, and to put his HR/9 into perspective, if he were able to keep the same HR/9 in the majors (which I wouldnt expect him to do since he would face more powerful and disciplined hitters) 1.36 would be 13th highest in the majors, and 6th highest in the NL.

Todd Helton will remember his 14-pitch at-bat Monday night
in Matt Cain's major-league debut. Helton fouled off eight
consecutive 3-2 pitches and then flied out. "That kid's
going to be a good pitcher with that kind of stuff," Helton
said of the 20-year-old Cain. "Someday, I'll be saying to my
grandkids, 'I had a 14-pitch at-bat against Matt Cain.'"

Wow. A stud like Helton is ready to put Cain in the Hall of
Fame. Listen to watch the hitters say more than an stats you
read on a website. Cain looks like the real deal and is an
outstanding keeper prospect. Consider him down the stretch
for help in your Fantasy rotation, but the lowly Giants will
struggle to make him a consistent winner.

Maybe it's just me, but I didn't think it was that good of a start. Not really bad, but he faced a AAA team except for 2 batters and didn't have control of any pitches. He couldn't throw his best pitch (curveball) for strikes and really didn't even attempt to throw it.

He is still a great prospect no doubt, but I thought his outing was only decent to be honest.

Yeah, I agree it was unspectacular but it doesn't take anything away from his stuff.

Prior to this season, his minor league career HR/9 was 0.64. And actually, the BB/9 is less worrisome than you would think. I'd say there's a very good chance that he turns out to be a perennial Cy Young contender, though it may take a little while for him to manifest those qualities.

For all of you who didn't get a chance to see it, it was really a spectacular start. He showed exactly why every team in the major leagues wanted that kid. We already knew that his stuff was amazing but this is what he can do when he harnesses his control. He was very composed on the mound, challenged hitters, didn't shy away. His fastball was just electric and his curve and change were working great. A great job by the youngster ;-D

Could anyone post Cain's pitching repetoire? I know his best pitches are a 94-95 mph fastball followed by a hard curve and an average changeup? I thought I read somewhere that his off-speed pitches were plus (a hard breaking ball, I think).
If anyone has any insight into exactly what he mixes in, and what are his best pitched, please post...
