Over the last couple of days, Joel Sherman has been very critical of the Yankees organization. The New Yorkers here might recall his articles but for those of you who aren't from NY, here is a quick synopsis of his comments.
1) He criticized the Tampa organization. He said that the the Milky Cabrera situation shows just how incompetent they are. He questioned who in Tampa or the minors said that this kid was a potential star when everyone else in baseball said that he wasn't. Outside scouts said he was flawed.
2) He also took a wicked snipe at Billy Connors. He said something to the effect, With regards to the Billy Connors pitching program, who in the majors is a product of it? The answer is no one is. I heard that slap all the way in Brooklyn. That must've zung Billy Goat. Today he said the Billy Connors pitching program has been so horrible that the Yanks are now forced to go after retreads like Redding, May and Leiter whom give other retreads a bad name.
3) Today he took his attack even further. A few days ago, someone here posted a link to a SI article which spoke of a prospect named Kevin Thompson who is a CF. Sherman quoted an AL scout who said that this kid can play but the Yankees don;t see him as a prospect. The scout went on to say thet the Yankees cannot evaluate their own players. Now this is very scary to hear being a Yankee fan. Sherman then said something like what can you expect from a minors organization that sent Cabrera to Torre saying he could really play defense in center. Ouch
The sad thing is Joel Sherman is 100% correct. Now the next question is, Is George beginning to realize this too. Time to show the Billy Goat and Tampa the door.
