MLB Weekly Injury roundup 7/7

Chicago Cubs 1B Derrek Lee (shoulder) left after one at-bat July 5 with left shoulder irritation. Lee stayed in the game for two innings before being replaced. An MRI on his shoulder was negative, though Lee is still expected to miss a few games.

Boston Red Sox SP Curt Schilling (ankle) made his second rehab start July 4 for Triple-A Pawtucket. After a wild outing, the plan to bring him back before the All-Star break has been scratched and Schilling is now expected to work out of the bullpen upon his return. In related news, CL Keith Foulke (knee) has been placed on the 15-day disabled list and is set to undergo arthroscopic knee surgery. He is expected to miss at least a month and at this point, Schilling could become the team's interim closer.

Philadelphia Phillies 1B Jim Thome (elbow) was placed on the DL July 1 with tendonitis in his right elbow. This is Thome's second stint on the DL this season.

Los Angeles Dodgers OF J.D. Drew (wrist) will miss up to two months after suffering a broken left wrist July 3. The injury occurred when Drew was hit by a fastball by Arizona Diamondbacks SP Brad Halsey. Drew will not need surgery, which would have ended his season.

San Francisco Giants OF Barry Bonds (knee) is currently seeing a physical therapist in the Los Angeles area but has not begun baseball-related activities. The Giants feel he will return sometime this summer, but no definite timetable has been given.



Baltimore Orioles - 3B Melvin Mora (hamstring) returned to the Orioles' lineup July 3 after missing 10 games... C Javy Lopez (hand) is waiting to start a rehab assignment and will probably return after the All-Star break... SP Erik Bedard (knee) is set to begin a rehab assignment in Double-A Bowie.

New York Yankees - SP Carl Pavano (shoulder) had an MRI July 5 that revealed no injury to his pitching shoulder. He could miss his next start, slated for Saturday, July 9... SP Jaret Wright (shoulder) threw a bullpen session July 5 but is still expected to be out until at least August.

Toronto Blue Jays - 2B Orlando Hudson (hamstring) did not play Wednesday, July 6, after straining his right hamstring the previous day... 3B Corey Koskie (thumb) has begun hitting off a tee and hopes to return before the end of July.


Chicago White Sox - SP Orlando Hernandez (shoulder) reported his right shoulder "felt good" after a pregame bullpen session July 4. He is slated for one more bullpen session before beginning a rehab assignment... 3B Joe Crede (back) is day-to-day with a sore back.

Cleveland Indians - OF Casey Blake (neck) has not started since June 30 due to soreness in his neck.

Detroit Tigers - OF Magglio Ordonez (hernia) was activated from the DL July 1 and promptly returned to the Tigers' lineup... C Ivan Rodriguez (finger) left the game Wednesday, July 6, with a jammed left pinkie finger.

Kansas City Royals - DH Mike Sweeney (wrist) was activated from the DL July 1... 3B Mark Teahen (groin) sat two games this weekend but returned to the lineup July 4... RP Jeremy Affeldt (groin) appeared in consecutive games for Triple-A Omaha and could rejoin the Royals July 8... SP Denny Bautista (shoulder) has stopped his rehab following an MRI Tuesday, July 5.

Minnesota Twins - 3B Michael Cuddyer (hand) was placed on the DL July 2 with a swollen hand. The move was retroactive to June 30... SP Brad Radke (neck) had his turn in the rotation pushed back to Friday, July 8. Radke has been battling soreness in his neck and shoulder for the past several weeks.


Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim - SS Orlando Cabrera (elbow) was placed on the DL July 2... Rehab for OF Steve Finley (shoulder) is going slower than expected, but he took live batting practice this week and is slated to return after the All-Star break.

Oakland Athletics - DH Erubiel Durazo (elbow) took 35-40 swings in the batting cage before the team's game July 2 and went to Arizona for more rehab work.

Texas Rangers - OF Richard Hidalgo (knee) has missed three consecutive games with tendonitis in his right knee... C Rod Barajas (hand) left the game Wednesday, July 6, with a bruised hand. He is day-to-day.


Atlanta Braves - SPs Tim Hudson (oblique) and Mike Hampton (forearm) both threw simulated games Wednesday, July 6, and neither reported any problems... SP John Thomson (finger) played long toss last week and reported no discomfort, and could start throwing bullpen sessions after the All-Star break... OF Brian Jordan (knee) was placed on the 15-day DL with chronic inflammation in his left knee.

Florida Marlins - SP Josh Beckett (blister) was activated from the DL June 30 and started that night's game. However, he left during the third inning of his next start with a left oblique strain and he will not start Sunday, July 10.

New York Mets - OF Cliff Floyd (hamstring) missed his team's game July 3 as a precautionary measure but returned the next game... 2B Kazuo Matsui (knee) isn't expected to return until after the All-Star break.

Philadelphia Phillies - SP Jon Lieber (elbow) left during the first inning of his start July 5 after getting hit in his pitching elbow with a line drive. X-rays did not reveal any broken bones and he has not been ruled out for his scheduled start Sunday, July 10.

Washington Nationals - 2B Jose Vidro (ankle) was activated from the DL July 5... 1B Nick Johnson (heel) was placed on the DL July 3 with a right heel contusion... SP Ryan Drese (hamstring) left his July 3 start early because of a tight right hamstring but isn't expected to miss his next turn in the rotation.


Chicago Cubs - 3B Aramis Ramirez (knee) did not start July 1 after getting hit just below his left knee with a pitch the day before. He appeared as a pinch-hitter and started the next game.

Cincinnati Reds - 2B Ryan Freel (hamstring) experienced some discomfort while running July 5 and will not head to Triple-A Louisville for a rehab assignment as planned. He will not return from the DL until after the All-Star break.

Houston Astros - CL Brad Lidge (biceps) returned to action July 5 after missing 11 days with a strained right biceps... SP Brandon Backe (elbow) has not missed any starts but has been pitching with a sprained ligament in the elbow of his pitching arm... SP Andy Pettitte (elbow) left his start Wednesday, July 6, due to discomfort in his left elbow.

Pittsburgh Pirates - OF Craig Wilson (finger) reported to Triple-A Indianapolis July 4 for a rehab assignment and should return after the All-Star break... RP Mike Gonzalez (knee) hasn't begun throwing yet, and the team is being cautious to make sure the injury doesn't reoccur. He is currently targeting a late July return.

St. Louis Cardinals - OF Reggie Sanders (foot) missed two games because of a sprained right foot. He returned to the lineup July 5.


Arizona Diamondbacks - 3B Troy Glaus (knee) missed his team's game July 3 after aggravating the ligament strain in the tendon of his right knee tendon the night before. He'll receive his third cortisone shot over the All-Star break... CL Brandon Lyon (elbow) threw off the mound Wednesday, July 6, and he is on track to return in mid-to-late July.

Los Angeles Dodgers - 2B Jeff Kent (hamstring) left in the sixth inning July 5 and is day-to-day... SS Cesar Izturis (hamstring) was placed on the DL July 5... SP Odalis Perez (shoulder) was activated from the DL July 5 and started that night's game... OF Milton Bradley (finger) has made no progress in rehab and may face surgery.

San Diego Padres - OF Dave Roberts (knee) avoided a trip to the DL and returned to the Padres' lineup July 3... 2B Mark Loretta (thumb) reported feeling no pain swinging the bat, but is still experiencing some pain while playing catch... C Ramon Hernandez (wrist) took batting practice July 5 and hopes to return to the Padres' lineup before the All-Star break... SP Adam Eaton (finger) is making continued progress in his recovery from a tendon sprain but is doubtful to appear before the All-Star break.

San Francisco Giants - 3B Edgardo Alfonzo (quadriceps) and OF Marquis Grissom (hamstring) are both at least two weeks away from rehab assignments... CL Armando Benitez (hamstring) was able to throw on the field July 5 and could return in early September, if not sooner... 2B Ray Durham (wrist) was a scratch Wednesday, July 6 after he strained his left wrist during batting practice.
