"It will be good for me to get out there after a lousy start a couple of days ago," said Johnson, who was hit for seven runs in five innings on Friday against the Tigers. "I'm trying to do whatever to get me on track and get the team a win."
"I think he likes the fact that he doesn't have to wait until Thursday to pitch," said manager Joe Torre. "He embraced that when we mentioned it the other day."
Johnson is 7-6 with a 4.24 ERA in 17 starts this season, already allowing 18 home runs -- his total from 2004. He is winless in his last three starts, getting hit for seven runs in two of those outings.
"I just want to help this team win," Johnson said. "Obviously, I haven't done what I'd like to do to get where I want to be and where the team would like to be."
Johnson was reminded that he came out of the bullpen in Game 7 of the 2001 World Series on no days' rest, having started Game 6 for Arizona.
"That was in the World Series," he said.
The lefty was then told that he started on short rest in the 1997 playoffs, also going on three days' rest in the one-game playoff for the American League West title between the Mariners and Angels in 1995.
"That was back when I was young," said a smiling Johnson.
Johnson, who threw 80 pitches on Friday, had offered to start last Wednesday on two days' rest when he learned that Mike Mussina was feeling under the weather. The game was rained out, but Torre said that Mussina would have taken the mound.
"Whatever it takes," the Unit said. "I'll go out and try to help us win a game."
