SEATTLE -- The Mariners designated Bret Boone for assignment Sunday morning, effectively severing ties with the most productive second baseman in franchise history.

The 36-year-old Boone, a three-time All-Star, has struggled this season, batting .231 with seven home runs and 34 RBIs in 74 games.

He entered the final year of his four-year contract with a .268 career average, 245 home runs and 984 RBIs.

He led the American League with 141 RBIs, while hitting 37 homers and batting .331, in 2001, after signing with the Mariners as a free agent during the previous offseason.

Besides designating Boone for assignment, the Mariners promoted second baseman Jose Lopez and outfielder Chris Snelling from Triple-A Tacoma and placed Dave Hansen on the 15-day disabled list because of elbow tendinitis.

The organization has 10 days to trade, release or assign Boone, who has slightly more than half of $9.25 million remaining on his contract, to the Minor Leagues.

I dont see the Mariners play at all and when I did, Boone was on the bench. Is he noticably smaller this year?

He managed to hit a whopping .232 in 207 AB's last year, so I'd be surprised if the 21-year old was ready to perform just yet.

Unless you're in a deep AL-only keeper league, I'd just keep an eye on him for now.
