MLB Weekly Injury round up 6/30

Boston Red Sox SP Curt Schilling (ankle) threw for Triple-A Charlotte June 29, his first action in a real baseball game since April 23.

Chicago Cubs SP Mark Prior (elbow) reported no unusual pain in his right arm or elbow one day after his first start (June 26) since suffering an elbow injury May 27. Teammate SP Kerry Wood (shoulder) was activated from the 15-day disabled list and started June 29 against the Milwaukee Brewers.

Detroit Tigers OF Magglio Ordonez (hernia) was 0-for-4 during his first rehab game at Triple-A Toledo June 28. There is a chance Ordonez, who has been out since April 13 after hernia surgery, could be activated in the next few days.

Los Angeles Dodgers CL Eric Gagne (elbow) doesn't need Tommy John surgery after all. Gagne had surgery on his right elbow and the doctors found less damage than expected. The doctors found a slight amount of fraying from the original graft that was sutured when Gagne underwent Tommy John surgery in 1997. The ligament didn't need to be replaced. He'll still miss the rest of the year, but he'll be out six months instead of 12-14 months and will be ready for spring training next year.

San Francisco Giants OF Barry Bonds (knee) had swelling in his surgically repaired right knee increase after he had continued workouts during the week.



Baltimore Orioles - C Javy Lopez (hand) was medically cleared to resume baseball activities. Lopez hit soft-toss ball in the batting cage June 28, reporting minimal pain in his hand after the session... SP Bruce Chen (toe) threw June 28, but it is still uncertain as to whether he will make his next scheduled start June 30... SP Erik Bedard (knee) threw off flat ground June 27 and reported no pain... 3B Melvin Mora (hamstring) could still be placed on the disabled list after missing seven straight games with a strained right hamstring.

Boston Red Sox - SP David Wells (foot), who slightly aggravated a right foot injury while covering first base on a play June 26 in Philadelphia, will make his next start July 2 against the Toronto Blue Jays.

New York Yankees - SP Kevin Brown (back) is expected to arrive in Tampa June 29 and begin rehabbing... OF Hideki Matsui (ankle) was back in left field for the June 27 game against the Baltimore Orioles, after spending 13 games as the designated hitter because of a sprained right ankle... The team transferred SP Jaret Wright (shoulder) from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day disabled list June 26.

Tampa Bay Devil Rays - OF Aubrey Huff (knee) is day-to-day due to a bruised right knee but is available for pinch-hitting duties... OF Rocco Baldelli (elbow) underwent successful elbow ligament replacement surgery June 23 and will be sidelined for another eight to nine months.


Chicago White Sox - Officials will talk the weekend of July 2 in Oakland about a schedule for SP Orlando Hernandez (shoulder), who is on the disabled list because of tightness in his right shoulder... SS Juan Uribe (back) returned to the lineup June 28, as expected. He had missed the previous six games with a sore back.

Cleveland Indians - 3B Aaron Boone returned to the lineup June 24, after having missed the previous two games with strep throat.

Detroit Tigers - SS Carlos Guillen (knee, hamstring) was back in the starting lineup June 26 after being activated earlier in the day from the 15-day disabled list... 1B Dmitri Young (finger) is day-to-day with a finger injury but is able to pinch-hit... OF Rondell White (shoulder) did not start Wednesday, June 29, due to a sore right shoulder, though he was able to pinch hit.

Kansas City Royals - DH Mike Sweeney (wrist) took 50 swings in batting practice and could be activated July 1... RPs Jeremy Affeldt (groin) and Ambiorix Burgos (shoulder) threw from flat ground before the game June 25 and felt no adverse effects.

Minnesota Twins - 3B Glenn Williams (shoulder) was placed on the 15-day disabled list June 28 due to a dislocated right shoulder. He is expected to miss six-to-eight weeks... 2B Nick Punto (hamstring) ran the bases at full speed before he left on a rehab assignment to Triple-A June 27. He could be back with the team as soon as July 4... 3B Michael Cuddyer (wrist) was hit by a pitch Wednesday, June 29, and removed from the game, though X-rays were negative.


Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim - OF Steve Finley (shoulder) is progressing and will swing a bat as early as July 1. He's eligible to return July 6, but the team isn't putting a firm date on that... SP Kelvim Escobar (elbow) will have surgery on his ailing elbow June 29. He is expected to be out eight weeks... 3B Dallas McPherson (groin) is day-to-day with a tight left groin.

Oakland Athletics - DH Erubiel Durazo (elbow) is swinging a bat one-handed and is showing some improvement... OF Eric Byrnes (shoulder) went to Oakland to check out the X-rays on his sore right shoulder, only to find the doctor not in and the assistant unable to help him. So he had an X-ray of his healthy left shoulder and compared them, and they looked the same. He pronounced himself fit to return... RP Huston Street (hamstring) returned to the mound for the first time since June 14 in the team's game June 28 against the Seattle Mariners.

Texas Rangers - SP Kenny Rogers (hand) fractured a bone in his right hand after he punched a water cooler in the Rangers' dugout shortly after leaving his start June 17 against the Washington Nationals. It was thought he would miss just one start with the injury, though a recent incident with a cameraman could lead to a suspension.


Atlanta Braves - 3B Chipper Jones (heel) has been encouraged by the fact that he's able to walk without discomfort. The team physician will examine him June 30... SP Horacio Ramirez (groin) is day-to-day due to a groin injury.

Florida Marlins - SP Josh Beckett (finger) threw for 14 minutes in the bullpen June 27 and said he's ready to go for June 30.

New York Mets - OF Carlos Beltran (leg) had fluid drained from his ailing leg June 27. As a result of the procedure, Beltran reported feeling "pain-free" for the first time since first having problems with his leg... An MRI taken June 26 on 1B Doug Mientkiewicz (hamstring) revealed he had a slightly torn right hamstring. The injury happened while Mientkiewicz was warming up in the on-deck circle June 25, prior to his first at-bat.

Philadelphia Phillies - OF Kenny Lofton (groin) suffered a right groin strain June 24 against the Boston Red Sox and had to leave the game... SP Randy Wolf (elbow) will have Tommy John surgery on his left elbow. He will miss the rest of this season and most of next year.

Washington Nationals - 1B Nick Johnson (heel) is out until the weekend after bruising his right heel on a play at the plate during Washington's loss to the Toronto Blue Jays June 26... SP Zach Day (radius), on the disabled list because of a fractured right radius, threw a bullpen session June 25 and pitched in a simulated game June 28... OF Ryan Church (shoulder, collarbone) is out for a few days after suffering a bruised left shoulder and right collarbone... 2B Jose Vidro (ankle, knee) had his rehab assignment postponed due to soreness in his right knee.


Cincinnati Reds - IF/OF Ryan Freel (toe) went on the 15-day disabled list because his toe injury was not getting any better.

Houston Astros - CL Brad Lidge (biceps) was unavailable Wednesday, June 29, due to a strained lower right biceps muscle. He is currently day-to-day and could be available as early as Thursday, June 30.

Milwaukee Brewers - 3B Russell Branyan (finger), who is coming back from a broken left middle finger, began a rehabilitation assignment with Triple-A Nashville June 27 and went 0-for-3 with a walk and two strikeouts June 28 as the designated hitter... IF Jeff Cirillo (hand) was placed on the 15-day disabled list June 25. He broke his left hand June 24 after getting hit by a pitch.

Pittsburgh Pirates - SP Oliver Perez (toe) will likely face some form of disciplinary action, in the form of a fine, for kicking a laundry cart following his June 26 start and suffering a toe injury. Perez will miss three to six weeks and was placed on the 15-day disabled list... OF Craig Wilson (hand) visited Dr. Mark Baratz, the Pirates' hand specialist, June 28 and he could be cleared to begin a rehabilitation stint soon... RP Mike Gonzalez (knee) is not expected back until after the All-Star break.

St. Louis Cardinals - OF Larry Walker (neck), who is restricted by a herniated disc in his neck, had his second cortisone shot of the season June 27 and returned to the lineup June 29... 2B Mark Grudzielanek (hand) had X-rays on his left hand that turned out negative after being hit by a pitch squarely.


Arizona Diamondbacks - 3B Troy Glaus (leg) received a cortisone shot in his left leg and was out June 26. It's the second shot received for the strained tendon behind his knee.

Colorado Rockies - SP Aaron Cook (blood clots) could return as soon as just after the All-Star break. The original plan was for Cook to return around Aug. 1... 2B Aaron Miles (chest muscle) was activated from the 15-day disabled list, as expected.

Los Angeles Dodgers - IF Olmedo Saenz (hip) felt a hip flexor twinge June 26 and will not start for a few days but is able to pinch hit... SP Wilson Alvarez (shoulder) threw a 30-pitch bullpen session June 27, mixing in a few curveballs... 3B Jose Valentin (knee) has started playing catch, and he hopes to add taking ground balls, with batting not far behind. Running will have to wait a bit, but he's hoping to return in a month... SP Odalis Perez (shoulder) is expected to make one more rehab start June 30 before returning to the team... OF Milton Bradley (finger) took 25 swings of soft toss June 26, but had to shut it down after five swings the next day due to pain in his torn finger ligament... OF J.D. Drew (knee) returned to the lineup June 27 after missing five games.

San Diego Padres - OF Dave Roberts (knee) will likely return to the lineup July 1... 1B Phil Nevin (oblique) went on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to June 21, with a strained left oblique... 2B Mark Loretta (thumb) had the cast removed from his left thumb and is looking forward to resuming baseball activities within a few days.

San Francisco Giants - 2B Ray Durham (back) returned to the lineup June 25 after missing a day due to a lower back strain... OF Marquis Grissom (hamstring) is continuing to work out at his Atlanta home, along with undergoing rehabilitation of a chronic left hamstring problem... 3B Edgardo Alfonzo (quad) is making good progress and will join the team in Arizona and San Diego during the upcoming road trip.
