Agreed - from a fantasy point of view, this is very nice. No more worrying about your early draft pick heading off to Japan... ;-D

And while the deal makes sense for I-Rod himself, who can now showcase his talents for a year, what do the Marlins gain? Even if we disregard the (glaring) financial issues, would you really want I-Rod mentoring your young pitching staff, and then packing his bags after a year? Why not give the young arms a bit of stability?

I didn't realize pudge lived in the Miami area. He is talking about working out a long term deal with the Marlins if this year works out. Very interesting. He's also making 3 million this year with 7 million deferred over the next several years. That's a smart move for him and his family. If he retires after this year (he won't) he'll still have the money rolling in.

Why?

I don't understand why the Marlins are willing to pay him $10 mil when it's obvious they can't compete yet for the NL East.Maybe a longer deal would make sense to me.

he's a Miami native and they are hoping they will pull in more dollars from the Latino community and others who love watching pudge play. I look forward to seeing them play Atlanta this year. I'm gonna buy me some tickets for sure.
