I think people over-estimate how many potential managers out there would turn down a job (such as the KC job). For many of these guys, including former managers and those hoping to break into the managerial ranks, baseball is their passion. With a limited number of major league (yes KC still counts) jobs, I think all but the very top-tier of managers would take just about any job offered to them.
As for who I think KC could have looked to over Bell, I'd include Terry Collins, Jerry Manuel, Howe, Gene Lamont and even Jimy Williams. I understand KC wanting to hire someone with experience, so that ruled out White (who I think will make a good manager someday) and guys like RedSox bench boss Brad Mills. Baird obviously took his time to think about it, but I still don't see Bell being a good pick.
