Actually the reserves are doing more deployments than the active duty these days.

Though the Navy is by far the safest out of all military branches, since our Navy is pretty much uncontested. When was the last direct naval combat between the US Navy and an opposing force? World War II?
I would not think he would be in much danger at all. And the buildup by China and such is all theoretical also. I think you are worrying too much. If it was the Army Reserve or something, I'd be a bit more worried. But the chance of wherever he is assigned on a ship being in direct combat is unlikely. Its certainly a different way to learn a living, but I would say some professions right now are more dangerous than being in the Navy (miner/tunnel digger, iron worker, etc)
