The Giants have a pretty thin farm system. Hitting wise, the best are Eddy Martinez-Esteve (who isn't even eligible to be traded right now) and Fred Lewis, who projects to not be a superstar, but have solid gap power. The Giants definitely wouldn't trade Matt Cain (nor should they), but is Merkin Valdez available for a closer prospect? IMO, with Bonds out for longer, it's really not worth putting the future on the line for now (I believe UUU's deal is up after this year anyway). Might as well keep the future for the future.
Had it been a different team, I wouldn't have been surprised to see a trade, but the Giants can't afford to lose prospects in my opinion. The in-house contenders for the closing job aren't very good, but what can they do?
