Less Filling, Plays Great

Anyone remember this from March 2005?

Definiton: A player that costs you next to nothing on draft day, whom you draft in the final rounds- and in turn will play better than some of the costly, salary filling, higher round picks.

My prime example: Chase Utley over Jeff Kent. This guy projects to have better numbers than Kent. "The Phillies' No. 1 draft choice in 2000"...."after breaking into the big leagues in 2003 and increasing his playing time in 2004, Utley is penciled in to play regularly this season. When he was drafted, he was advertised as having Jeff Kent-like tools, and to this point, he's living up to those comparisons.

Utley, if played only against righties, will produce numbers better than Kent. Period. Guaranteed.

Like I've said before, stats you aren't seeing:
1) .266 BA
2) 15 BB, 40 K
3) .200 BA, 1 HR, 3 RBI in 46 AB vs. LHP
4) .308 OBP

OPS vs Righties = .830
K-BB = Kent

This guy also plays in a much better park, especially now that Kent is a Dodger, plus he's a 11 year younger, with more speed.
Not to mention the solid spring he's having. .345Avg with 3HRS

Kent is obviously superior because of the track record, but getting guys like Juan Uribe and Chase Utley in the late rounds are what win championships. Kent in the 3rd round doesn't give you much value where he's picked.

I'd much prefer a round 18 Uribe or Utley to a round 3 Kent.

Considering the results that they will give you and the rounds in which you can get them, I'd say Utley is better value.
