BAL P coach just said that Ryan is the Closer.

Just heard it on MLB.COM Gameday audio.

He said Julio hasn't had enough time in ST to be considered the closer, and that they will have to also consider this when the bring him into games.

That should have been obvious by this point, but thanks for providing that info.

Not so obvious since Mazzilli made it unclear just a day ago.
Maine has a good swing for a pitcher but on anything that moves, he has no chance. And if it's a fastball, it has to be up in the zone. Basically, the pitcher has to hit his bat. - Mike Pelfrey

The media muddled that one. No where in any article does Mazzilli state that Julio is competing for the job. The writer of the article insinuated that on his own.

Re-read these articles more carefully and try to determine what is the author's opinion and what the manager actually said.

Most knowledgable owners have known that he will be the closer for a while and have knowed to draft him right after the top tier. The guy had 1.4 k/ip last year and dropped his walk rate. Expect him to perform close to the Lidge Krod Gagne level.

You're kidding yourself if you think he is going to put up closer numbers comparitive to those 3.

His stats against righties last season don't make encouraging reading. In essence he is nothing more than an excellent leftie set-up specialist that K's a lot of hitters.

If you draft him just below the top tier guys you will be very disappointed.

Its not like he was terrible against righties. Its just that he destroyed lefties to make the comparison look out of proportion.
The guy is an excellent reliever.

You might want to look up his stats vs. righties before you post something like this. He wasn't as dominant but he was still much better than Julio or any other pitcher, period, that they have on their roster.

Plus you have to consider his progress over the last three seasons. He's been getting better every season. So while his numbers may dip since he won't be exclusively used against righities, he certainly has the tools to be a second tier closer.
