Something tells me that he has a good shot of getting his closer job back after a seaon of rehab. If he's healthy I think he is good for 30-40 saves and would at least give you a decent ERA. And I think he's still avalible for pick up in most leagues.

any more thoughts about this guy and the cubs closer situation?

No more information than you've probably read. I don't follow the Cubs real closely but I am getting the same feeling. He's getting undrafted in a lot of drafts I've seen in favor of Hawkins (who has value as an MR regardless) and Dempster. I'll definitely start taking a flier on him. ;-D

Maine has a good swing for a pitcher but on anything that moves, he has no chance. And if it's a fastball, it has to be up in the zone. Basically, the pitcher has to hit his bat. - Mike Pelfrey

no way hawkins gets the job as closer. it'll be dempster's to lose and borowski will be second in line. hawkins may have the best stuff, but he doesn't have the mental ability to close and he's a lot better as the setup man.

I'm not sure why Dempster keeps getting mentioned as the #1 candidate. All I ever heard/read was Dusty mention they would look at him in the spring (this was in Oct). Now this week they say they are conditioning him to be a SP in case Rusch doesn't work out as the #5 SP or is needed in LR.

Borowski the leading contender by far IMO.

This is a position battle that needs to be watched during spring training. The 5th starter for the Cubs will probably end up Dempster or Rusch. If Jobo comes out and wows Dusty Baker in spring training, he may give him the nod....but, for other reasons I won't go into here, I think Dusty will give the job to Latroy.

Dusty tried every way he could think of to not give it to Boro in '03, then Joe just kept getting the job done and Baker was pretty much forced to call him the closer.

He's a bargain in most drafts I have seen so far this season and I have confidence he can come back and do the job. I just hope the "Dust head" gives him a shot again.
