Bonds or Beltran in OBP league

Postby Ed Whitson » Mon Feb 28, 2005 9:54 am

My league counts 5 traditional categories of avg, hr, rbi, runs, and sb as well as obp and total bases. Both will be there when I pick, who should i take?

Both of you guys go with Bonds with no hesitation? I'm leaning towards Bonds but should i be concerned with the injury?

He was already taking batting practice this past weekend. In an OBP league Bonds dominates, not even close.

Injury or no injury, the bulk of pitchers in the league will avoid giving Bonds anything to hit. Forget about the HRs, think of all the walks…

Yeah in OBP leagues Bonds becomes the No. 1 overall pick in my opinion. He locks that cat. down.
Let's go Mets!

Personally in OBP leagues I really like grabbing Abreu early, but definatly Bonds over Beltran

While I do agree that Bonds should be top 3 in OBP leagues, I'm not so sure he should be #1.

That .600 OBP is overkill. I've played in 3 OBP leagues and every Bonds owner wins that cat by a huge amount at the end of the year.

It's like drafting a guy who steals 200 bases. It's wasteful.

It really depends on how you rate the other owners in your league. Lots of times, people use ESPN or other cheat sheets which don't take into account OBP. In those types of leagues, you're likely going to finish top 3 in OBP anyways so Bonds isn't as big of a factor.

Add in his age and steroid controversy, I'd be uneasy with Bonds #1 although I wouldn't fault anyone for taking him there.

If it's overkill, isn't it a good idea to trade Bonds after you gain a nice lead in OBP? Then, you could make up some space in other categories...

Somebody with time and good math skills can probably figure out just how much more Barry is worth in OBP/OPS leagues.
