With AJ Burnett out for the season, I picked up Shawn Chacon. Is this a good pick, or have I killed my team? (My other starters are Halladay, Schmidt, Woody Williams, and Padilla.) (For relievers, in a league that counts holds, I have Mo Rivera, Williamson, Arthur Rhodes, and Johan Santana.)
I thought I would never have a Rockies pitcher, but Chacon has been outstanding in April, even at Coors. What could he do on the road?! So far, he's 4-0 in 5 starts, with a 1.04 ERA, a 0.84 WHIP, and 25 strikeouts, with 14 of those strikeouts coming in the last 2 games.
And the majority of his starts so far have been at Coors. Hold onto Chacon. He's been crazy good so far. He may just have Coors Field mastered.
The trick to pitching at Coors is to have a good fastball and a great changeup, and show your breaking ball every once in a while to keep the hitters guessing. Pitchers that rely too much on the movement of their pitches are the ones that get shelled at Coors. I don't know if Chacon fits the bill on that, but I assume he must, considering his success there. Anybody who's watched him play know what kind of a changeup he has?
his changeup is fine but what it is is that he learned to pitch in denver in high school so his curveball was learned in the thin air and it works, so he is right at home at coors. he might be a guy where (you might not believe this) i would think about starting at coors and benching away from coors.

It seems his pitches work just as well away from Coors. I too lost Burnett and am using Chacon to fill his slot although I picked him up 2 weeks ago now.
I have heard this term a lot this year.. "a classic example of a pitcher finally understanding the game at a later age" .... Obviously this guy is not going to by Cy Young material come October but I really can't see any reason that the wheels would come off.

That is being hopeful. To say a guy with a career ERA in the 5s is showing no signs of slowing down isn't right. Obviously, like many hot starters this year, they haven't shown a sign of slowing down. That doesn't mean they won't. I'm sorry, but I doubt a Colorado guy can sustain this. His ERA has to go into 4s, at least.

Maybe, I'm just naive since I didn't even consider picking him up. It may just work out.
However, I'd rather take a chance on sleepers from good teams, like Brett Myers, Ted Lilly, or Gil Meche

Colorado is doing well now, but they are not in those other team's league in terms of final standings. We'll see. I've been wrong before, I may be wrong again
