Personally, I think it depends on how active u think the league owners are.
I always want to draft as quick as possible because it is so fun. And if you have active owners, u can still trade before the season begins.

I like to draft at least two weeks prior to opening day. We usually make some trades even before the season begins and it is always fun to see who gets stuck with the guy who blows out his leg in spring training (unless it is you!)

yes i liek drafting in the middle or march, so i dont have to wait until april third cause by now im dying to draft....
i think our league is drafting about March 19th
how did colon win the cy young??

If you're talking live drafts only, then I try to do those about 2 - 3 weeks before the season. It's not too early, but there are still some unknowns that a knowledgable person might have an advantage at.
However I mostly participate in slow, offline drafts, so those have to be taken care of rather early in order to be done in time for the season.
