How to find an in-person league in your area

Postby Sticky Spice » Mon Feb 21, 2005 10:30 am

This is more of an attempt at a brainstorm.

I moved to North Carolina from Seattle five years ago. I still love and participate in my Seattle league, but I am still struggling to fit in and find friends in this drastically different culture. I thought a great way to find people with similar interests would be to find a league.

In that five years I have been searching for a local-ish league and all attempts have been utter failures.

I have posted at our classifieds with many bumps, posted at other sites O:-) , scoured various matchmaker boards, google searches, just about everything I can think of doing online.

What is baffling is that I work with numerous men from early 20's to retirement age, and I've been unsuccessful in getting much interest.

I think the last straw was when I went to a local collectibles shop that, in addition to comics and card games, had sports cards. I asked him if he or any of his patrons talked about or participated in fantasy baseball. He said "fantasy baseball, is that a new game?" :~( ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!

Does anyone have any ideas for me and others in my situation to try?

Maybe try a classified ad in a local newspaper? Or if you live close to one of the colleges, put up some flyers at their student center asking for interested persons to contact you.

first of all - have you signed up for wrveres' H2H World Series yet? You might find a handful of people close to you in there.

I have the same problem here - well kinda. I can get 12 of my friends together, but we have found over the years that its tough to get people of the same level of competitiveness and the leagues begin to resemble Yahoo pub leagues with the inactivity of the bottom half teams.

I have simply decided that its just not feasable to put one together, so I look for leagues here that have well established players Ive gotten to know over a period of time. The competition level in them is fantastic. I also play my money league through a national service, but I dont know the people involved in as much as I would like.

The only advice I can say is keep trying - finding 11 other people as passionate about this as you are who live in a 30 mile radius can be tricky.

I too have struggled with this. We have a "core" of 7 people where I live, but have not been able to get 5 more that are as passionate as we are. It has resulted in the 5 other owners being spread out over the entire country. We make it work, but the drafts have been a pain.

I guess my point is what was already stated. I do not think you will find exactly what you are looking for.

Yeah, I think actually assembling a league is out of the question cosidering my lack of contacts here.

But man, in Seattle our league has been over 16 teams the last 10 years and is regularly at 20 or more teams. I know those kinda leagues are rare, but hell I'd settle for an 8-team AL or NL only league.
