Trade or Rule Change?

Postby Dr. Obvious » Sun Feb 20, 2005 3:39 am

Hey all,

I'm in a 8-team points league on Yahoo with several newbies, including the commissioner. This should be a piece of cake, but the league is unfortunately using odd categories right now (Hitters: GS (1 point), R (2), HR (5), RBI (3), SB (3), K (-3), E (-2); Pitchers: GS (1), W (5), SHO (5), SV (3), ER (-2), BB (-2), K (4)).

Since I've done fantasy before, the commissioner respects my opinion, and I could probably have the categories to the standard 5x5 pretty easily, and maybe the league to Roto scoring as well. But my other option, of course, is to exploit these rules as best as possible.

So, here's the two-part question: Do I try and make some trades to take advantage of this scoring system or do I try and get the scoring and/or categories changed to something more normal? And if I do go the trade route, what should I do?

This is a league of Red Sox fans, so there should be a premium on Sox and Yankees would be easier to pick up, I'd expect.

Here's my team (which was autodrafted before I could modify my rankings ;-7) :

C J. Posada (NYY)
1B A. Pujols (StL)
2B M. Giles (Atl)
3B A. Beltre (Sea)
SS M. Tejada (Bal)
OF C. Crawford (TB)
OF A. Huff (TB)
OF S. Podsednik (CWS)
Util A. Ramirez (ChC)
BN D. Wright (NYM)
BN S. Casey (Cin)
BN T. Womack (NYY)
BN C. Utley (Phi)

SP J. Santana (Min)
SP M. Prior (ChC)
RP F. Rodriguez (Ana)
RP T. Hoffman (SD)
P M. Mussina (NYY)
P J. Vazquez (NYY)
P J. Mesa (Pit)
BN G. Maddux (ChC)

Wow - your team is fantastic. I don't know how those scoring rules will affect the quality of the team, but it looks great.
I'd say to push for 5x5, at least when the other option is exploiting the strange scoring your newbie commish came up with, and the other newbies in your league. 5x5 is more straightforward, and the advie the other folks in your league get from fantasy sites, etc. will be more valuable, as most of it is geared towards traditional scoring leagues. This should, in turn, make the other folks in your league more competitive, which will make the whole thing more fun.

I don't really like league with odd categories. I would try to get it changed to 5x5 but since the teams are already drafted you should get everyone's permission. If the cats stay the same I wouldn't mess around with SB guys. I would go straight power since HR = 5 + 2 for a R + 3 for a RBI.
