Maybe his stats warrant a 4th round pick but he's the 2nd best shorstop in the league and last I checked, shortstop is a crappy pool to choose from. Jeter's position scarcity alone bumps him up to late 2nd, early 3rd in my book.

I would never take Jeter in the 2nd round. I would have to see him in the late 3rd to even think of going that direction. There are similar SS that you can get late 4th or even late 5th (M. Young, J. Rollins, Nomar, Furcal, and Renteria). For my money, there isnt an overwhelming difference between Jeter and any one of the others to pick Jeter two rounds ahead of any of the others.

Had Young had a couple seasons like last, he'd be right next to, or even before Jeter. For me, the fact that he's still inexperienced and taking other factors into consideration such as the fact that A-Rod, Sheff, Matsui will be hitting behind Jeter which means more oppurtunities to score runs, and with the bottom of the Yankee order being so good, potentially drive in more runs, makes me put Jeter as the safer candidate to do well.
