He didn't get de-knighted.
I really don't see much to choose between Lopez and Ponson. They've both been basically average pitchers over the course of their careers, and both show a nasty tendency to be highly variable in their performance.

Maybe the manager is the one saying well he could get better but I haven't seen it out of him.
P.S. anyone who would want ponson on their team besides the free chicken wings are stupied, their good but not that good.

Free agent pitchers were expensive as all get out this year (Kris Benson signed for like $10 mil a year!?!?! I mean, KRIS BENSON!?!?!). Since the O's went overboard on free agents last year, they didn't have any money left to go after an ace this year, so they're basically stuck with Ponson, in whom they made a terrible investment last year.
From everything I've heard the O's DID and DO have $$$. For 2004 they were actually looking to make 1 more big signing. I can't remember who it was, but I think they were trying to get a RF to move Gibbons. And now they are free of Segui's contract and one or two more hefty ones.
Angelos just doesn't want people to show up, so he can demand a sweeter deal from MLB. To this I say Go Nats!

From ROTOWORLD:
Orioles pitching coach Ray Miller estimates that Sidney Ponson has lost ''at least 30 pounds'' since Miller was rehired last June.
