Nope, that was 2002. 2001 he bounced around from 4/5th in the rotation and the bullpen. Heck, he didnt even beat out Paul Quantril until a few weeks into 2002 to be named the closer.
2001.
Was my first year of fantasy baseball. I realized very early on that I didnt know half as much about baseball as I thought I did.
Bonds 73HR was the biggest thing about that year IMHO. Roids or not, it was still something nobody saw coming.
As has been noted Sosa had a great year.
It was Roberto Alomar's last year as a stud fantasy 2B.
Brett Boone came out of nowhere drafted in the late rounds of mixed leagues or as a waiver wire pickup to have a monster year.
Eric Chavez broke out big after the all-star break with 17HR 60+RBI and over .300 AVE batting 7th in the lineup post all-star break.
Kazahiro Sasaki became an immediate top 8 closer (although his run didnt last long).
With the surprise performances of Ichiro, B. Boone, K. Sasaki, F. Garcia's best season of his career, Paul Abbott's career year 17W's ( Abbott 17W's?

Highest run support of all pitchers in MLB in 2001 I believe ), and many other tangibles the Mariners broke the record for most Wins in a season.
Luis Gonzalez broke out with a career year.
McGwire played his injury plagued last season batting below the Mendoza line for most of the season, he would tease all owners that held on to him with a - 10HR in one week barrage as he returned from the DL late season before then getting hurt again. he ended the season with a horrible .187 batting average.
The 1-2 punch of Schilling and RJ defeated the Yanks in game 7 of a dramatic WS to end their run of championships.
Good thread. There is countless other stuff that could be added, but 2001 was certainly a unique and great season.
