Are these rookies shoe ins to start?

Postby Chiefscards » Fri Feb 18, 2005 1:37 am

Which of these guys are going to be handed starting spots out of spring training? Which will make the biggest fantasy impact?

I'm in a deep 20 team keeper. We keep 8 so we're basically starting the draft in the 9th round. How early should I be looking to take one of the MI's? (we play (3), 2b, SS, MI)

T. Iguchi
N. Swisher
J. Reed
R. Adams
J. Hardy
G. Atkins
C. Burke

Only know about JJ Hardy and Atkins being probable opening day starters. Atkins seems likely to be more of an everyday player, while Hardy will still be platooned a bit more.

Russ Adams will basically be handed the starting job in Toronto... it's his to lose, and with Menechino and John McDonald as the other options, Adams would have to screw up pretty badly to lose the opening day spot.

I think the "biggest fantasy impact" list is comprised of the following:

Iguchi.

Burke seems to be sure to start with the Stros letting Kent go.

Well this is what RotoWorld says
Iguchi is expected to start at second base and will compete with Juan Uribe to become the No. 2 hitter in the lineup. He has enough power and speed to make him a pretty good risk at $15-$16 in AL-only leagues.

I was thinking about drafting him in a deep H2H keper league that I'm in (16 teams, 24 man Major league roster)

I've heard a range of things on Burke - that will start 2b for the Astros or just be competing for 2b in spring training.

And aren't Swisher and Reed outfielders? Or am I thinking the wrong Reed.

All of the guys mentioned should have starting jobs as long as they don't tank in Spring Training. I'm having trouble believing that the Brewers won't at least start Hardy off in the minors, but no one else seems to think so. Also, Atkins may lose a lot of at bats to the other Luis Gonzalez, or even the starting 3B job.
