I'm not panicking yet but....

Postby HYLRedSox » Mon Apr 28, 2003 7:54 pm

I know its still April and the season is still very young. I don't plan on going into panic mode, but I just wanted to know if I have reason for concern or not. This is a 12 team, Yahoo public 5x5 roto league. I find myself in 10th, behind 1st by close to 50 points. Ouch, I know. I was just wondering if my team was really that bad or if I've been suffering from early season letdown.

C Mayne, Brent (C-KC)
1B Klesko, Ryan (1B, RF-SD)
2B Jimenez, D'Angelo (2B, 3B-CWS)
3B Blalock, Hank (3B-Tex)
SS Aurilia, Rich (SS-SF)
OF Sosa, Sammy (RF-ChC)
OF Anderson, Garret (LF-Ana)
OF Nixon, Trot (RF-Bos)
Util Roberts, Dave (CF-LA)
Bench Batista, Tony (3B-Bal)
Bench Sanders, Reggie (RF-Pit)
Bench Giles, BrianDL (LF-Pit)

Pitchers
SP Oswalt, Roy (SP-Hou)
SP Lowe, Derek (SP-Bos)
RP Koch, Billy (RP-CWS)
RP Lidge, Brad (RP-Hou)
P Perez, Odalis (SP-LA)
P Wells, David (SP-NYY)
P Suppan, Jeff (SP-Pit)
Bench Glavine, Tom (SP-NYM)
Bench Chacon, Shawn (SP-Col)
DL Isringhausen, JasonDL (RP-StL)

I will probably just sit tight, I just wanted to see if you thought my team is really as bad as they are performing right now.

Your starting pitching has some potential. I wouldn't get too worried there. You could use Izzy to get back soon (as could I). Lowe and Koch should be OK--although Koch has never had a great ERA/WHIP for a closer, he'll at least get the save chances though. I'd be careful not to hold on to Chacon too long. He'll slip quite a bit in the stats out there in the thin air. You don't have great trade bait on offense, but I'd shop R. Sanders and/or D. Jimenez. There the ones who are off to good starts, but I wouldn't count on for an entire season. See if you can get some infield upgrades for them. I'd even be inclined to throw in David Wells in some trade offers if it can get you some top-notch offensive players.

not that bad

Postby pkarr5000 » Tue Apr 29, 2003 4:31 pm

your pitching is incredible, although you have suffered a major setback
by having Isringhausen. Just a suggestion, trade Koch for Foulke. I have him on my team and he is incredible. The A's will win a ton of games this year giving him several opportunities and no one can figure out his nasty chang-up. Your outfield looks good. You have a bunch of sleepers too, so dont worry. Its still early and most of your players are just in short jams. Theyll break out by a month, tops. If all else fails, try making some trades.

Well I am still down in the dumps, sitting in poor 11th place now. I guess it just doesn't make any sense to me. I know I need to be patient but it is beging to get a little ridiculous. I have now been offered a trade. I get Palmiero and K Brown for Oswalt. Should I just take it or try to get more for Oswalt?

OK well here is his roster:

2B Giles, Marcus (2B-Atl)
3B Chavez, Eric (3B-Oak)
SS Garciaparra, Nomar (SS-Bos)
OF Jones, Andruw (CF-Atl)
OF Wilson, Preston (CF-Col)
OF Guerrero, Vladimir (RF-Mon)
Util Green, Shawn (RF-LA)
Bench Palmeiro, Rafael (1B, DH-Tex)

Pitchers
SP Santana, Johan (SP, RP-Min)
SP Clement, Matt (SP-ChC)
RP Foulke, Keith (RP-Oak)
RP Kline, Steve (RP-StL)
P Julio, Jorge (RP-Bal)
P Carter, Lance (RP-TB)
P Benson, Kris (SP-Pit)
Bench Brown, Kevin (SP, RP-LA)
Bench Colon, Bartolo (SP-CWS)
Bench Lohse, Kyle (SP-Min)

What if I offer Brown/Chavez for Blalock/Oswalt? He might not accept that. Or what if I try for Giles? Any suggestions?

honestly, i don't think your team performing poorly is a fluke. you are very weak at c and 2b, and mediocre at ss and of. sammy and garrett are studs but relying on dave roberts and trot nixon? i guess once you get giles back you'll be better off, but you need another solid bat in there somewhere. aurilia hasn't shown any signs that his career year two years ago wasn't a fluke. klesko is an above average 1b but nothing amazing since he doesn't steal anymore.

as for your pitching, oswalt, glavine, and perez is a nice core. i'd get what i can out of chacon and trade him while he's hot. i'd be shocked if he stays even close to his hot start all year.

now, the guy you are thinking of trading with... THAT is a solid team. ridiculous stacked lineup, solid pitching, 4 closers. the fact that he's benching palmeiro speaks volumes... seems like that guy is going to win the league in my opinion. he must be in first.

if you want to just move up, i'd actually think about that trade giving oswalt. it makes sense for him, and it's a decent risk for you since brown might be just as good as oswalt (if he stays healthy) and palmeiro will hit 40 hrs.
