BMRB Round 1 - Barenaked Ladies vs. Sonic Youth

I've always believed that Barenaked Ladies, the Dave Matthews Band and Blues Traveler all came out of the same machine -- created by an evil villain/mad-scientist hell-bent on flooding the world's FM airwaves with unlistenable crap.

They've had some good songs, and I don't know who Sonic Youth is, so the Ladies get my vote

I'm not a huge fan, and don't expect them to go far, but hopefully they'll win this one.

BNL seems to be getting a lot of backlash votes against them. And I haven't even seen anyone say they voted for Sonic Youth because they liked them.

But seriously, Sonic Youth is unreal. FatGuy above mentioned Daydream Nation--Also peep Dirty, or 1,000 Leaves, or even Washing Machine. They should be renamed Sonic Awesome.

I remember when the Washing Machine album came out. The cover photo of two fans with the same t-shirt was some random picture they had from one of their tours. I remember seeing a thing on MTV news where Sonic Youth was actually looking for the two people in the photo so they could give them credit/money???? I don't remember exactly.

Honestly I haven't given SY a serious listen. Their discography is huge and its a bit overwhelming to figure out what would be a good album to start with. What would you recommend for someone just wanting to get their feet wet?

I skimmed the SY bio, but I didn't see this...

Can someone suggest some specific songs I can go sample? I think I've only heard Bull in the Heather thanks to Beavis and Butthead.

That show opened my eyes to some great music.
