Virgin has cure for bad dates Published: February 11, 2005, 11:11 AM PST By Reuters
It's every dater's nightmare: You're on a date, it's a disaster--but there's no way out.
With Valentine's Day looming, a mobile phone company in Australia has come to the rescue with a service offering an escape from the date from hell.
All a person has to do is discreetly dial three numbers and then hang up without saying a word.
"Virgin Mobile will call them back a minute later with a perfect excuse to get them out of there. We'll even talk them through what to say," the company, a joint venture of the Virgin Group and Optus, said in a statement.
A survey of 402 people by Virgin Mobile found that 53 percent arrange in advance to have a friend call them mid-date to check whether they are all right or need an excuse to get out.
The results showed women were twice as likely as men to use the tactic.
For those whose previous dates have gone badly and prompted thoughts of vengeful, drunken phone calls, Virgin Mobile also offers a service that will keep them from dialing numbers they might later regret having dialed.
Hopefully when DaQ finally gets a date...she hasn't found out about this...
Might come in handy for some people though...

England's Worcester Canoe Club set the world record for paddling a hand-propelled bathtub. The 25 man team covered a distance of 55 miles, 425 yards in 24 hours on September 28 and 29, 1979.
yeah we have had nearly the same service here at CIngular for a while now. you can set up a time for the phone to ring and it will go off with a pre chosen excuse to leave.
The results showed women were twice as likely as men to use the tactic.
Why does that not surprise me?
Lol.
Yes doctor, I am sick. Sick of those who are spineless. Sick of those who feel self-entitled. Sick of those who are hypocrites. Yes doctor, an army is forming. Yes doctor, there will be a war. Yes doctor, there will be blood.....
