Frequently Asked Questions!

Postby Madison » Sun Feb 13, 2005 1:48 am

Welcome to the Cafe'! Here are a few commonly asked questions and the answers for them!

Q - So what are the general rules here?
A - Well, as the sign at the top of the screen reads: No spittin', no swearin', no politics. It's a good start. Basically, just watch your language (posters only have to be 13 to be allowed here, so we do have some youngsters) avoid politics, and be courteous to your fellow posters, and all should be fine. :-)

Q - How did the Cafe' come into being?
A - Well, Here's a good place to start reading!

Q - How do I get an icon under my name?
A - Click here to see what the icons are for and how to earn them. The moderators keep an eye out for those that are deserving.

Q - What's an avatar? What's a signature? How do I put one in? What are the size requirements?
A - Click here and the guys will be happy to help get you all set up.

Q - When can I sign up for yahoo?
A - Opening day for Yahoo is Feb. 17th.

Q - Where can I find a list of contract year players?
A - Well, you could look in the "irrelevent, useless information" forum since the contract year bounce is a complete myth. Or, you could look someplace like Contract Year Myths. However, there is a complete list right here.

Q - Why is there a gold box next to my name?
A - Only the admin staff, mods, and you can see the gold box(es). Typically warnings are given for inappropriate behavior, foul language, abusive posts, etc. 3 gold boxes = banishment from the Cafe'. The warnings are periodically reviewed and can be removed at the admins/mods discretion.

Q - Where can I find stats and info on players?
A - MLB.com....Rotoworld.....ESPN......Sportsline......The Cube

Q - Where can I find projected lineups?
A - http://www.sportsline.com/mlb/story/7043910 and http://www.theinsidepitch.com/

Q - Where can I find two start pitchers for the week?
A - http://www.rototimes.com/index.php?sport=bsball&type=twostart

Q - Does the Cafe' have rankings or cheat sheets?
A - Yes we do! These are based on normal 5x5 scoring and can be found right here!

Q - What is the difference between Roto and H2H?
A - In a roto league your team accumulates stats in all catagories and are awarded points based on league standings in each individual catagory. Example: In a 10 team league, the team with the most home runs is awarded 10 points, second is awarded 9 points, 3rd is awarded 8 points, and on down the line. Standings and points change daily.

In H2H, your team goes heads up against one other team in the league. For every catagory you outscore your opponent, your team is awarded 1 point. Example: Your team hits 15 home runs for the week, your opponent's team hits 13 home runs. Your team is awarded one point in the weekly standings.

Q - What is 5x5?
A - 5x5 refers to typical league scoring catagories. Average, runs, homers, RBI, and steals for hitters and Wins, ERA, WHIP, K's, and saves for pitchers.

Q - What is a Keeper league?
A - A keeper league is a league in which you get to "keep" a certain number of players from one year to the next. Typically, entire rosters are kept over the offseason to allow for trades, and a date is set in which you need to decide who your "keepers" are, and then start preparing for the draft. Typical keepers range from 5 to 10 players.

Q - What is a dynasty league?
A - In a dynasty league, you keep your entire roster from one season to the next. Most include a vast minor league farm system as well.

Q - What is the tiebreaker in H2H leagues?
A - ERA for the week is the typical stat used to determine the winner for the week if there's a tie.

Q - Where can I download stats?
A - MLB Stats http://www.dougstats.com/
and this is Japanese stats .. http://baseballguru.com/jalbright/stats.html

Q - What are these new stats and abbreviations I keep seeing? How are they calculated and what do they mean?
A - Here and Here are some good reference tools for them.

Q - Why didn't (insert pitcher) get the save tonight?

A - According to the MLB rule book this is the official scoring for a save....

SAVES FOR RELIEF PITCHERS
10.20
Credit a pitcher with a save when he meets all three of the following conditions: (1) He is the finishing pitcher in a game won by his club; and (2) He is not the winning pitcher; and (3) He qualifies under one of the following conditions: (a) He enters the game with a lead of no more than three runs and pitches for at least one inning; or (b) He enters the game, regardless of the count, with the potential tying run either on base, or at bat, or on deck (that is, the potential tying run is either already on base or is one of the first two batsmen he faces); or (c) He pitches effectively for at least three innings. No more than one save may be credited in each game.

Q - When do the Cafe' Games begin?
A - Usually the first weekend of the season begins the Pick 3 and the Wicked Weekend. Keep an eye on those forums for the exacts. Trivia Blitz runs year round, so if you have a trivia question, post it up!

Q - How do I get into a mock draft?
A - Keep your eyes on the Fantasy Baseball Talk forum for threads looking for owners. When one comes up, jump right in and claim a spot. Also, live drafts can always be done in our Chat Room where it's live and quick!

Q - In Yahoo, what is the difference between O-Rank and Rank??
A - According to Yahoo:

O-Rank Player's overall Yahoo! Sports ranking (based on current and prior seasons).
Rank Player's ranking based on stat filter selected.

Q - How do I line up stats in my posts?
A - Use the < pre> and < /pre> HTML command (take out the spaces of course)...it's even better for stats:

<pre>Victor Martinez while hitting Lefty vs. while hitting Righty:

G AB R H HR RBI BB K AVG OBP SLG OPS
RHB 96 170 29 48 6 28 25 26 .282 .380 .465 .845
LHB 139 350 48 99 17 80 35 43 .283 .348 .506 .854</pre>

All nice and neat. ;-D Or you can use the [code ] feature like this:

Code: Select all
Victor Martinez while hitting Lefty vs. while hitting Righty:

G   AB   R   H  HR  RBI   BB   K  AVG   OBP   SLG   OPS
RHB   96  170  29  48   6   28   25  26 .282  .380  .465  .845
LHB  139  350  48  99  17   80   35  43 .283  .348  .506  .854

To do this, preface the type with ["code"] and end it with ["/code"], but remove the quotation marks from inside the brackets. Both work, so take your pick. ;-D

Yes doctor, I am sick.
Sick of those who are spineless.
Sick of those who feel self-entitled.
Sick of those who are hypocrites.
Yes doctor, an army is forming.
Yes doctor, there will be a war.

Nice ;-D

Maine has a good swing for a pitcher but on anything that moves, he has no chance. And if it's a fastball, it has to be up in the zone. Basically, the pitcher has to hit his bat. - Mike Pelfrey
