Drays sign Goodwin--- moving Huff?

Postby red » Thu Feb 10, 2005 12:33 pm

So, they sign an older and less-upside version of Gaithright-- why would they do that?
Maybe there's something to these Huff rumors. They've taken him off first and third, he's in the outfield where they have Baldelli (when healthy), Crawford, and Gaithright (if they wanted) but right now, Crawford Baldelli and Huff.
Is it possible that they're moving Gaithright into the full time slot, put Goodwin as the pinch runner on the bench- and move Huff?
I can't understand why they would want Goodwin if they wanted both Goodwin and Gaithright to be bench players.

well since baldelli is out about the first 3 months of the season due to injury, that might would account for needing another outfielder.... and gathright is not a proven fact on the ML level yet, so yea i think that is a decent signing......

They don't seem to have much faith in Gathright. My guess is he goes back to the minors or is traded for a pitcher.

I read somewhere that they may have signed Goodwin as kind of a mentor to Gaithright because they're a similar kind of player

I read the same thing about Goodwin mentoring Gathright, but right now, Gathright seem's like a Jason Tyner-clone so I think the D-Rays could do much better just leaving Danny Bautista out there.

The D-Rays situation is crowded, and it is possible that they would trade Huff, but I would imagine that they would have to get back eitehr a frickin' good starter, or a hitter to replace him. By mid-season this could change, if one of the veteran D-Rays (Josh Phelps, Danny Bautista?) steps up and hits well and Baldelli gets healthy, or if one (or more) of the youngsters (Jorge Cantu, BJ Upton, Delmon Young, Jonny Gomes, or even Gathright though I am not a big fan) forces their way into the lineup. At that point I would think that the Rays would try and acquire a useful starter, since Kazmir is probably their best right now, and while I think he will be a stud I don't think he is ready to be the ace.[/quote]

Add Goodwin and subtract Huff? :-L

More likely just adding bench depth, particularly with Baldelli unavailable for 2 months or more.
