The 80s was the best! For those too young to really remember that decade, it's a hard thing to describe.
One key thing: MTV was born! When it launched in 81, a lot of homes still didn't have cable TV, and if they did, their cable carrier didn't have MTV. Over the next year, MTV trickled into city after city... and once you got it -- you were HOOKED! MTV replaced the radio -- it was in a sense a video version of radio, playing several songs, then a VJ would talk up what just played (where have you gone, Martha Quinn?)
And the VIDEOS!!! Goofy concept videos from groups like Madness and Flock of Seagulls, intercut with performance videos from rock acts like Pat Benatar and Bryan Adams... it was addictive.
Hard to compare the dawn of MTV to anything in more modern terms... suffice it to say, it singlehandedly changed the way people enjoyed popular music.
I'm certain I'm showing my age here, but I can not look back on the 80s without a big dumb smile stretching across my face.
